Saving Our Sons Ministries (SOSM) began as a seed planted in the heart and mind of Reginald Akkeem Berry Sr. in 1997 while serving a prison sentence. He witnessed how the incoming inmates had become younger each year, in addition to him reading about how young African American males were killing one another daily. Desiring to reduce these statistics, Akkeem partnered with his wife Denise Berry, and together they gave birth to SOSM. Having served over 18 years in prison, Reginald was paroled in September of 2006 and has worked diligently to save at-risk youth ever since. SOSM has grown since its inception. The staff consists of men and women who have proven to be equally passionate about effecting change in their communities. SOSM utilizes a variety of outreach and mentorship programs in proactive ways that reach youth in the environments where they are located. The organization frequents schools, religious establishments, community centers, and related venues bringing with them a message of hope and well-being. SOSM’s staff is replete with competent and dedicated individuals who know from personal experience the consequences of crime, violence, and drug addiction. It is often said that “Real recognizes real” and this slogan serves as a testament to the effectiveness of SOSM’s speakers. Consequently, the response following a SOSM presentation has been incessantly positive. Why? It is simply because the words spoken are sincerely authentic and heartfelt. In addition to our efforts to prevent youngsters from getting involved in illicit activity, or far worse being killed, our program also services ex-offenders with job readiness classes, computer skills and anti-violence techniques.
